BJJ and the art of seeing the future

POST
A former Navy SEAL active in Iraq, the writer John Gretton "Jocko" Willink always affirms that his BJJ training was supremely important in his career.

In a recent talk with Rickson Gracie on his podcast, Jocko remembered an incredible sensation he experienced in jiu-jitsu, as he began foreseeing his opponents' moves. According to his experience, as you train more and more, a kind of magic happens that sort of enables you to see the future.

Rickson agreed, adding:

“Jiu-jitsu is like chess. The more experienced you get, the more moves you will be able to see in advance. It’s a special art, because it does not depend on continuous force to win, but on continuous movements that translate into a fight that flows, where the pressure on your opponent arises from a harmonious attack. You start to understand the possible movements of your body and your opponent’s body. Thus, it’s not necessary to trap an opponent; it’s enough to understand where they’re going and what comes next. And so the opponent acts, while we anticipate; that is, they free their neck and give an arm, for example. Our role is to seize the opportunity, and not waste the checkmate.”

How about you? Have you been seeing the future in your training lately?
